Sadly this is not the first time that tragedy has occurred in sports, with several plane crashes occurring over the years. One of the most famous involved Manchester United, whose fateful flight almost sixty years ago failed to take-off from an airport in Germany.
The Munich Air disaster occurred on February 6, 1958 when British European Airways flight 609 crashed on its third attempt to take off from a slush-covered runway at Munich-Riem airport, on the plane was the Manchester United football team, nicknamed the "Busby Babes", along with supporters and journalists. 23 out of 44 on the plane died.

In 1949, after the Latino Cup, the plane carrying football side, Torino hit the mountain during take off, 23 players, club officals and journalists died, most of the players were integral parts of the Italian national team at the time. It took the Azzurri many years to recover from that tragedy.
18 footballers perish in plane accident in April 1993
Zambia had one of their strongest national teams ever in the early 90s, but a sudden tragedy hit their team, all 18 footballers, including Efford Chabala and Wisdom Mumba Chansa died in a plane crash April 27, 1993.
43 people die in accident in September 2011
The most recent incident involved the Russia hockey team Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, 43 persihed september 7, 2011, in plane crash near the city of Yaroslavl. Casualties included former NHL All-star Pavol Demitra, and former longtime NHL defenseman Brad McCrimmon, who was a coach on the squad.
