Leaders of three main opposition parties have met to discuss when to try to impeach President Park Geun-hye.

The three main opposition parties have previously said they would try to impeach Park either on Friday or on December 9, when a parliamentary plenary session is scheduled. Support from two-thirds of the 300-member parliament is needed to impeach.

The president said on Tuesday that she will resign if parliament decides she should. But an impeachment would smash her chance to do so in a safe transfer of power. The opposition parties have said Park had missed the chance to step down voluntarily and the public wanted nothing short of her immediate removal from office.

“The address the president delivered yesterday is a violation of the Constitution and a political ploy to aggravate an illegal situation,” said Choo Mi-Ae, Head of Main Opposition Democratic Party.

“The public has requested the resignation of President Park through the 2 million protesters at candlelight vigils. In other words, the public calls for impeachment, not resignation.”
