The African Union Commission has also expressed its condolences to Cuba. The union says Castro will remain in African hearts and minds because of the solidarity he showed with the continent.

According to officials at the African Union the chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma said Fidel Castro was an iconic leader who fought for freedom and equality. 

Dlamini Zuma also said Castro was a friend of Africa and its people.

Some here associate Fidel as the person who stood with South Africa's struggle against apartheid and every other challenge in the continent. 

The African Union expressed its deepest condolences for the people and government of Cuba. 

And said Castro will remain in the hearts and minds of Africans for the solidarity he has displayed with the continent over the years.
