The United States is a major destination for corrupt Chinese officials and economic fugitives. Through the JLG, China has worked closely with the US to arrest and extradite them.
China’s most-wanted corruption suspect, Yang Xiuzhu was returned to China last Wednesday after 13 years on the run. This is a landmark case after the JLG’s establishment back in 1998. Two other "most wanted" fugitives were repatriated in 2014 and 2015.
Three suspects have been sentenced or are facing trial in the US. The US and China have no extradition treaty, so officials requested the fugitives’ returns through the JLG. They provided evidence on charges including immigration fraud and money laundering.
