China happens to be home to an 87-year-old Peruvian scholar, who has spent over thirty years here. He's not only a prestigious scholar on China's history and culture, but also a friend of the country.
Guillermo Dañino is a famous Peruvian scholar on Chinese studies. Having spent a total of 30 years in China, Danino has a strong connection to this country.
He happened to visit China when he was 50, and his life has been tightly tied with this land ever since.
"My story with China starts from 1979, when I received a phone call from the Chinese Embassy in Peru, asking me to teach Spanish at Nanjing University. At that time, I barely had any knowledge of China, nor had I known any Chinese people," said Dañino.
But his love for China grew deeper as he spent more time here.
He loves the people, the richness of the culture and the vastness of its landscapes.
"China has impressed me in many ways. First, Chinese people are very friendly, and I'm pretty impressed by their progressiveness. They are always eager to learn. And the rapid development of the country has also been beyond my imagination," said Dañino.
And if you are a fan of old Chinese films, Dañino won't be a stranger to you. He's been involved in many Chinese movies since he first came to China in 1979.
From diplomatic officers to businessmen, doctors to drug dealers. Dañino has managed to portray many different characters in over 25 movies.
But to him, the biggest challenge is still the language.
"The shooting process has always been very interesting. But since the lines are all in Chinese, and most of them are quite long, it's very difficult for me to remember," said Dañino.
Now Dañino is a famous scholar on Chinese studies, and has written over 30 books on China, with 25 published.
Moreover, he has even written a collection of poems, to express all that he sees and feels in this country that means a lot to his life.
