Donald Trump was born in New York in 1946 and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1968. Trump then went to work in his father's real estate company, and eventually took charge of it in 1971.

During the following decades, he built up his real estate empire, and expanded his business interests into various fields, including casinos, golf courses, and entertainment.

In the past, Trump has supported presidential candidates from both the Democratic and Republican parties before announcing in June 2015, that he would run for president as the Republican nominee.

He successfully won against Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in Wednesday's election.
