Germany plans security investigations of all military recruits from July 2017. This comes after its military counter-espionage service identified 20 Islamists in the country's armed forces.
German media reports that another 60 potential cases are also under investigation. Military recruiting offices said they had received an undisclosed number of queries from people who wanted to join for only a few months and expressed a keen interest in intensive weapons and equipment training.
Last year, 1.1 million irregular migrants and refugees arrived in the country. Since then, there have been clashes between residents and asylum seekers. German security services are now on high alert after two terror attacks by Islamist migrants this summer.
