Music has always been an expression of identity. But in the modern era traditional forms of music in Africa have been struggling. One festival in Uganda is hoping to change that by fusing the old and new.

Traditionally one of the best music platforms, the Pearl Rhythm Festival is giving conventional Ugandan music a stage. A cast of artistes dazzle with their best; tiring through a raft of hits more diverse in traditional hip hop and folk. And it is music that is resonating with the audience.

This festival has combined music from different parts of the country creating a perfect musical experience even for the revelers. The artists also feel that in their diverse songs they are greatly contributing to the indigenous cultures.
 
“Our generation comes from a cultural disconnection, but we want to reconnect and we believe the neo-indigenous out of Uganda want to reconnect with the indigenous people. How do we revive our ancient culture with modern solutions? That’s what we are—that’s what we are doing” said Banu Clan Buka Chimey.

The festival also scouts for budding musical acts. Many are later coached by established world musicians; preparing them for bigger audiences.

“With the stage coach, it is levelled: they call for auditions, you sound good, you are through, then they will give you this big stage; it mentally prepares you” said artist Jaq Deweyi.

The exponential growth of the artistes that hit the stage has been nothing short of extraordinary. With every passing year, the numbers could get bigger and the music more of a spectacle to listen and dance to.
