Festival brings vitality to ancient town Wuzhen

From Beijing to east China's Zhejiang Province now where one of China's newest and most celebrated theater festivals has wrapped up. The Wuzhen Theater Festival came to an end over the weekend. Under the theme of "Gaze Beyond”, the fourth edition saw artists and performers from 13 countries and regions for 22 world renowned classic dramas.

Every year, artists from around the world bring their fanciest shows to Wuzhen, injecting vitality into the water town.

Co-founded by several Chinese actors and directors, this festival has become a cultural symbol of the 1,300-year-old town.

Aside from an impressive array of dramas, the festival also features street art, music, traditional Chinese operas and juggling.

"I think the biggest breakthrough is the influence brought by the Wuzhen Theater Festival to the world. People from around the world are attracted to the beautiful Chinese water town, which I think is so cool. And the communication in the arts, dramas and many other aspects, is more powerful than previous years," said Meng Jinghui, art director of Wuzhen Theater Festival

The Wuzhen theatre festival also holds competitions, dialogues and forums, providing platforms for young artists to roll out their shows and to exchange ideas about theatre performance.

The Festival was initiated in 2013 and has grown into one of China's largest celebrations of theatrical art, with roughly 2,000 performances happening both indoors and outdoors over 10 days.
