A new drama 'The Leaning Tower of Pisa' is about to meet the audience at Beijing's National Theatre of China. The story comes from Russian literature, and reflects the problems in ordinary people's marriages.
Drama 'The Leaning Tower of Pisa' to be on show
Disagreements and arguments fill the daily life of a middle-aged couple, with the essence of love being forgotten. The drama compares marriage to the Leaning Tower of Pisa, leaning but still holding together.
"The beauty of the Leaning Tower of Pisa lies in the leaning and imperfections of marriage. But unless it collapses, the leaning keeps its balance, which is still beautiful. The drama arouses thinking over freedom of humanity and the meaning of marriage at the same time," said director Wang Jiannan.
However, as the marriage is coming to an end, the pair feel something they have missed before and start to view their marriage from a different perspective.
The leading roles are classmates from college. They played a couple when they were in school more than 2 decades ago and both feel quite familiar working together.
"We are tacit in cooperation, but exhausted physically at first. There are so many lines which contain a lot of changes. It's quite demanding for the actors," said actor Zhai Xiaoxing.
"The Leaning Tower of Pisa" is one of the major dramas in the National Theatre's autumn and winter performing season, which will last until the end of the year. The drama will make its debut on Friday.
