People in Thailand have responded to the death of King Bhumibol. Given his 70-year reign, many in the country have never experienced life without him on the throne.

"When he looks down at us, he will feel proud. We have to be strong. Thailand has to be strong and move forward," said Wichit Supsuphan, 43.

"I wish I was born when the king was younger. I would love to have seen progress during the king's rein instead of loss," said Thanika Rungthong, 23.

In a televised address to the nation, the country's Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha said Thailand will hold a one-year period of mourning, and that all entertainment events must be "toned down" for one month. He described the king's death as "the most devastating moment for Thais".
