BEIJING, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli on Friday visited the embassy of Thailand in Beijing to express condolences over the death of Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who died Thursday after years of illness.
Zhang wrote a condolence message in the embassy's log book. Hailing King Bhumibol as "a much-loved King by the Thai people" and "a great friend of the Chinese people," Zhang said the king made "irreplaceable efforts" toward the cause of China-Thailand friendship.
Zhang said he conveys deep condolences over the death of King Bhumibol on behalf of the Chinese government and people.
China and Thailand are close neighbors, said Zhang, adding that China is willing to work with Thailand to further promote their comprehensive strategic partnership of cooperation.
The charge d'affaires of the Thai embassy, Karntimon Ruksakiati, expressed appreciation to Zhang for his visit.
The Bureau of the Thai Royal Household announced that the 88-year-old monarch died at 3:52 p.m. (8:52 GMT) at Siriraj hospital, where he had been diagnosed with critical ailments over the last several years.
