Full coverage: King of Thailand Bhumibol Adulyadej Passes Away

Bhumibol's son, the 64-year-old Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn, is poised to succeed his late father to the Thai throne.

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha announced that Vajiralongkorn is heir to the throne and his succession is in accordance with the country's constitution.

The prince served as an officer in three branches of Thailand's armed forces. He took part in military action against rebel groups and underwent advanced military training in the United States.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said he hopes Bhumibol's legacy of commitment to universal values and respect for human rights would continue.
