China plans to work harder to protect the Great Wall, looking to enlist ordinary citizens in the protection of their shared heritage. Since the start of September, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage has been holding an online fundraising drive that will pay for a new center for the protection the Great Wall.
The East Zhou Dynasty started construction on the wall in the 3rd century BC. It now spans over 21,000 kilometers. Less than a tenth is well-preserved. About third has disappeared entirely. In 2006, the government began imposing fines of up to 5,000 yuan or 750 US dollars on people who take bricks from the Great Wall.
