UN Special Envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura has spoken strongly against the crisis and its effects on millions of innocent people. Speaking at a U-N Security Council emergency meeting, Mistura had said he believes the situation can improve if world powers push for a new truce.
"I can only reiterate the concern of the Secretary General on the first incident was a tragic mistake by the US and a deadly attack on the convoy... but no incident does not justify what we see unravelling in front of our eyes," Mistura said.
The UN Security Council meeting is being held in New York at the request of the U-S and France. Mistura regrets the failure of both the U-S and Russia to maintain the ceasefire agreed upon by both parties on September 9th in Geneva. The Handarat camp in northern Aleppo has changed hands twice since Saturday. Rebels are now in control. Dozens have died after the Syrian army mounted a new offensive on Thursday. This escalation of violence dims any hope for a new ceasefire. Rebels say Russian warplanes are responsible for many of the air strikes in the city.
