Garnett came into the NBA as a high-schooler in 1995. He ushered in a change by becoming the first player in decades to jump directly to the pros without going to college. That started a trend, until the league ruled that players must spend at least one-year in college.
He would also be at the centre of the league's first lockout -- his 6-year 126-million dollar deal, the richest in history at the time, forced the NBA to re-think its finances, thus locking out the players.
On the court, he was intense, and he spent the first half of his career with the team that drafted him -- the Minnesota Timberwolves, but on-court success never came. He earned his only MVP award in Minny for the 2004 season. But it wasn't until his trade to the Boston Celtics that he became a winner, helping the C's to their 17th NBA title in 2008, by beating the hated LA Lakers.
