World leaders arrive in Hangzhou for G20 Summit

World leaders are streaming into Hangzhou for the meeting. Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi landed this morning. This is his second visit to China since taking office in 2014. That was also the year Italy and China established a comprehensive strategic partnership. The country was just hit by a massive earthquake, and as a platform of cooperation, the G20 summit will provide support to Rome.

Also already in Hangzhou is Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. This is his first visit to China since taking office last year. Besides Hangzhou, Trudeau’s tour also includes stops in Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. Trudeau said during this trip, he would “strive for a closer, more balanced relationship between Canada and China."

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is in China for the second time this year. It is his 11th visit to the country in his role as U.N. secretary general. He spoke highly of China’s efforts to get the U.N.’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development on the agenda for the G20 summit. He also said this year’s summit would be a good chance to promote the early implementation of the Paris Agreement on climate change.
