United Nations refugee agency chief Filippo Grandi has urged Greece to improve conditions in its refugee camps. He also warned of severe security threats to more vulnerable residents in some of the facilities.
“There are still many thousands of people living in sites that are not yet at standard conditions, some are but some are not,” he said.
“It is important to upgrade the conditions to minimise the risk factors to which these people are exposed and they will be increasingly exposed when winter comes.”

Grandi was speaking at a press conference in Athens after visiting refugee camps and talking with Greek government officials.
He said that Greek authorities need to upgrade sanitation at some of the camps, and increase policing. He warned that women without their spouses and unaccompanied minors are most at risk.
Grandi also urged other European Union countries to speed up the process of taking in many of the nearly 60,000 people trapped in Greece.
