Full coverage: THAAD Deployment in South Korea

To start the programme with trilateral cooperation between China, Japan and South Korea. Foreign ministers from all three countries will meet this week in Tokyo. Formal talks will be held on Wednesday, where cooperation and regional and global issues will be discussed. Tensions on the Korean Peninsula are also likely to be on the agenda.

The talks come as tensions between China and Japan have increased over territorial disputes in the East China Sea, and China and South Korea have clashed over the planned deployment of the THAAD anti-missile system. At a daily press conference, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang urged Japan to mend relations with China. He also spoke about China's ties with South Korea.

"Recently, Japan's attitude towards its relations with China has turned negative, especially on the South China Sea issue. Japan has been increasing tensions, against the will of the international community and countries in the region. I believe that during the meeting, Foreign Minister Wang Yi will let the Japanese side know China's views, and urge Japan to take concrete actions to achieve healthy and stable ties with China. South Korea is our important neighbour. There are now some issues in our bilateral ties, which we do not want to see. But we still value our relations a lot and hope our ties can develop sustainably, which requires effort from both sides," said Lu Kang.
