Tokyo seeks greater military standing

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe returned to power in 2012 vowing to increase the nation's military spending. He has kept his word. Japan's military budget has grown each year over the past five years.

Abe's government has also pushed for a constitutional amendment that will allow Japan to expand its military role abroad. Last year, Japan's parliament sent Japanese soldiers abroad for the first time since World War Two.
