The 2016 Rio Olympics are now history and with deep inflation and economic recession, it was doubtful at first if Brazil could successfully hold the Games. There were also questions about what would be left for the Brazilians after the Olympic torch extinguishes.

Rio spent about 12 billion US dollars to prepared for the Olympics and about 7.6 billion of those dollars went to infrastructure construction and environmental improvements. The facilities are still proving useful.

"The public transportation facilities like the Olympic subway made our life much more convenient, and help us save a lot of time," said Rio resident.

To make full use of the infrastructures, Rio designed the venues in ways that could be reused after the games ended.

"The venues in the Olympic Park, including Carioca Arenas 1, 2 and 3, Maria Lenk Aquatics Center, gymnastics center and tennis center, will be kept permanently, and become the national sports center after refurbishment," said Mario Andrada, Rio Olympics spokesman.

The mayor says that about 80 percent of the expenditures on the Olympics came from the private sector with the public funding just 20 percent.
