To go from smiles to scowls as the Russian track and field team suffered a final humiliation at the Rio Olympics on Saturday when the sport's governing body, the IAAF suspended long jumper Darya Klishina, the nation's only athlete to have so far survived a blanket ban for doping.

The suspension, announced three days before she was due to compete, relates to new evidence uncovered by an anti-doping probe into allegations Russia ran a systematic, state-sponsored cheating program, said a source familiar with the matter. Klishina defended herself, saying she is clean, and will appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Russian Olympic chief Alexander Zhukov is backing Klishina, and says the decision by the IAAF is "a cynical mockery" of the athlete.

"This is a very strange decision, because she (Darya Klishina) already has accreditation for the games and the reason is very strange. They, the IAAF, said that Darya's name was mentioned in the McLaren report, but the McLaren report was published a long time ago. Why did they wait until the beginning of the competition here at the Olympic Games? What kind of new information did they get? There are no answers to this question," said Russian Olympic Committee President Alexander Zhukov.
