Singaporean swimmer Joseph Schooling pulled off a stunning Olympic victory for his country --- beating US legend Michael Phelps in the 100-meter butterfly event.
This is the country's first-ever Olympic gold medal. The 21-year-old Asian champion completed a wire-to-wire victory to deny Phelps a fourth successive title in the event. Schooling won in an Olympic record of 50.39 seconds.
A photo of a young Schooling with Phelps, taken eight years ago, became widely circulated on the Internet after the Singaporean's win.
He said the American legend inspired him to Olympic victory. Schooling said he hoped his win would spur other talented athletes in his country to pursue their dreams.
