Turkey's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has said the EU is making serious mistakes in its response to the failed military coup in the country. He also said that if the West "loses" Turkey it will be because of its own errors and not due to Ankara's ties with Russia, China or the Islamic world. He added that Turkey will send officials to Russia to discuss resolutions to the Syrian conflict.

"Unfortunately the EU is making some serious mistakes. They have failed the test following the coup attempt. Turkey and Russia have similar views on the need for a ceasefire in Syria, the provision of humanitarian aid and a political solution to end the crisis. There may be different views on how to establish a ceasefire," said Mevlut Cavusoglu.

Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Turkey's rapprochement with Russia was not meant as a message to the West. His comments reflect deep frustration in Turkey that the response to the coup from Europe and the United States has been lukewarm. Officials in Turkey have also been angry over concerns from the West about the severity of the post-coup crackdown.
