Turkey's Supreme Military Council will meet in Ankara today (Thursday). It's the first time since the failed coup earlier this month. The focus is expected to be on the future structure of the army.

On Wednesday, the country's media reported close to 1,700 military personnel were dismissed. Some 10-thousand soldiers have been detained as part of an investigation.

The general staff says more than 86-hundred soldiers took part in the July 15th coup attempt. That's about 1.5 percent of the military's total personnel. The general staff also says nearly 150 pieces of military equipment including warplanes, tanks, and navy vessels were used.

"This abhorrent coup, which has largely devastated the reputation of Turkish Armed Forces in the country, which was always traditionally amongst the most trusted institutions, has been a blow to the army's reputation. This council would provide an opportunity for the Armed Forces to build a structure, build a command structure that is, that could serve as the basis of a renewed relationship with the people of the Turkish Republic," said Ahmet Kasim Han, political scientist, Kadir Has University.
