Thailand will release the full result of Sunday's referendum on adopting a new military-backed constitution today. Preliminary results have shown over 61 percent of Thais voted in favor of it.
Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam said a general election will take place in 2017. That confirmed the timeline Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha laid out ahead of the referendum. Prior to the vote, major political parties had criticized the draft constitution, saying it would constrict democracy.
The draft charter included one provision calling for an appointed Senate with seats reserved for military commanders.
