Vietnam has won its first-ever Olympic gold on the first day of the Games. 41-year-old veteran Hoang Xuan Vinh claimed the men's 10 meter air pistol event after clinching 202.5 points in the finals. This is the second Olympics for Hoang.

In the 2012 London Olympics, he lost out on the bronze medal for the 50 meter air pistol event by a tiny margin of 0.1 point. Vietnam has won two Olympic silvers prior to the 2016 games -- one for weightlifting, and the other for taekwondo.
