Brazil spent just over four-and-a-half-billion US dollars to host the Olympics. That's about 50-percent more than expected.
Take a look at some of the costs of some of the Summer and Winter Games. The most expensive in recent history was the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. The cost: nearly 22 billion US dollars. The least expensive was a tie between the 1994 Lillehammer Winter games and the 1998 Nagano Winter Games.
Comparing the final costs with the budgeted amounts, Sochi blew through Russia's budget by nearly 300-percent. In comparison, the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing matched the budget almost perfectly.
