The first ever Olympic team made up of refugees stepped into the spotlight at the opening ceremony of this year's Games. The team was the penultimate one to enter the Maracana Stadium, just ahead of host Brazil. 800-meter runner Rose Nathike Lokonyen carried the Olympic flag for the squad.
She fled the war in South Sudan and arrived at a refugee camp in Kenya in 2002. The team includes five runners from South Sudan, two swimmers from Syria, two judokas from the Democratic Republic of Congo and a marathon runner from Ethiopia.
