Meanwhile, security has been stepped up at the various Olympics venues across Rio de Janeiro, as protests into the cost of the Games continue. Just hours before the opening ceremony there were clashes between the protestors and security forces.

Armed police and soldiers have been deployed in and around the Olympic Park, the main venue for the games. Fifteen hundred security personnel are monitoring the city's public places 24 hours a day, through 55 hundred security cameras.
