Turkey's parliament has formally approved a motion establishing a three-month state of emergency following last Friday's failed military coup. 346 legislators  voted for it, and 115 against it. 

This will be the first nationwide state of emergency since the 1980s. It allows President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to expand his crackdown. The motion was approved since 317 of the 550 members of parliament belong to Erdogan's Justice and Development Party. 

A lawmaker from the main opposition party said the state of emergency would pave the way for power abuse. But Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Simsek said Turkey would emerge with stronger democracy and a better economy and investment climate.
