Full coverage: Bastille Day Attack In Nice, France
France has been badly plagued by terror in the past two years. The truck attack in Nice comes as France is picking up the pieces from the November 2015 Paris attacks which left 130 dead at the Bataclan concert hall and various nightspots.
The attack in Nice happened just hours after France announced that the state of emergency declared after last November's attacks would come to an end later this month, as a new law bolstering security in France was adopted in May.
However, speaking during the press conference after the attack, President Francois Hollande has extended the state of emergency.
France's recent spike in terror attacks started in January 2015, when gunmen burst into the offices of the satirical French magazine Charlie Hebdo, and killed 11 people, before shooting dead a policeman in the streets outside. Over the next two days, another five people were killed in coordinated attacks, four of them during a siege at a Jewish supermarket in the east of Paris.
