Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has announced a day of national mourning for the country's most respected philanthropist, Abdul Sattar Edhi, who has passed away at the age of 88 at a hospital in Karachi late on Friday evening.

Flags have been lowered to half-mast across the country and people are paying tributes to Edhi. He began his charitable work as a young man and set up one of the country's biggest welfare organisations, the Edhi Foundation.
