China's president Xi Jinping has sent his congratulations to the new Philippine president. Spokesman for China's foreign ministry, Hong Lei, confirmed the congratulatory message at a news briefing in Beijing.

"President Xi Jinping has sent a congratulatory message to president of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, through diplomatic channels, congratulating him on becoming the 16th President of the country. President Xi said China and the Philippines are natural neighbours."

"The good-neighborly relationship between the two countries has been passed down through thousands of years, and it is the direction that must be adhered to. Xi said he would like to work together with president Duterte to improve bilateral relations and achieve a healthy and stable development. Xi also believes that as far as the two sides share good will, and believe in mutual trust and cooperation, we will definitely create a beautiful future," Hong Lei said.
