German Chancellor Angela Merkel says she does not want to pressure Britain on the speed of its exit from the European Union. But she said there could be no informal discussions on the issue until London applies to leave. Merkel is likely to play a key role in shaping the future relationship between Britain and the EU. She said the UK needs some time to pick itself up, but the EU can not wait forever. The two-year exit process will begin when Britain invokes Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty. Merkel was speaking during a joint news conference with Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman. She will discuss the matter with Cameron at a gathering of EU leaders in Brussels on Tuesday.

"I have two announcements to make about this. Firstly we cannot have a permanent impasse. I believe this wouldn't be good for the economies of both sides, the EU's 27 and Great Britain. But Great Britain must first for a period of time now analyse things, I have a definite understanding for that. By the way, we will speak tomorrow to the British prime minister about these issues. Secondly, it must be clear that there can be no informal negotiation before the intention of separating from the European Union is officially declared. We cannot start any informal talks without having the message from Great Britain." Merkel said.
