Campaigning has restarted ahead of Britain's referendum on EU membership. In the wake of the murder of Labour MP Jo Cox, leading politicians on both sides of the debate have sought to duck accusations that they had been using negative and extreme rhetoric.

"I hope, because of the tragic death of Jo, we can have a less divisive political debate in our country and particularly in the last few days of this referendum we can have less baseless assertion and inflammatory rhetoric and more reasoned argument and facts," UK Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne said.

"I am in favour of an amnesty for illegal immigrants who have been here for more than 12 years, unable to contribute to this economy, unable to pay taxes, unable to take a proper part in society and I will tell you why: because it is the humane thing to do, it is the economically rational thing to do and it means taking back control of a system that is at the moment completely out of control," Bori Johnson, ex-mayor of London, Vote Leave Campaigner, said.
