The security situation is still worrisome in Pakistan, five years after Osama bin Laden was killed. Experts say Washington's anti-terrorism policy will affect Pakistan for quite a long time.

Khalid Rehman is the director general of the Pakistan Institute of Policy Studies.  He said in a phone interview that al-Qaeda wasn't so active in Pakistan before 2011. But the death of Osama bin Laden has changed Pakistanis attitude towards the operations against the terrorism. The country has been accused of giving asylum to bin Laden.

Rehman's assessment is supported by military experts, who say Pakistan was split by anti-US powers and their opponents.

"Whatever operation they are planning against the terrorists, it has the backing of the people, that provide the real strength, until 2013, early of 2014, that kind of support is not available, because the impression that the government is doing something because of the American pressure," said Khalid Rehman, director of Pakistan Institute of Policy Studies.

Pakistan still faces huge security threats.  In 2014, dozens were killed when the Karachi International Airport was attacked.  The Pakistan military then launched massive raids against the terrorists in its northwestern border area with Afghanistan.

Military officials say thousands of terrorists were eliminated.  But big cities like Lahore and Peshawar have come under relentless attack in the past two years.

"Until now, during last 15 years, despite American and NATO forces presents for almost one and a half decade there, despite so much amount of money and human lose, we find Afghanistan is still in turmoil, in a way its a full out of Afghanistan situation that Pakistan is facing," Rehman said.

Experts say terrorist groups are threatening Pakistan and its neighboring countries. They say while the Afghanistan peace process is crucial to regional security, Pakistan, too, should play a more active role in fighting terrorism.
