Ukraine today marks 30 years since Chernobyl - the world's worst nuclear accident which forced a global rethink about the wisdom of relying on atomic fuel. A wreath laying ceremony was held in Kiev attended by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and other political leaders. Meanwhile, another service was held in the town of Slavutych, which was specifically built for those who were evacuated following the accident.
An explosion at the power plant in Pripyat on April 26, 1986, released more than eight tons of radioactive material, which contaminated an area of over 60,000 square kilometres. The initial accident caused 31 deaths, while some 3.2 million people were exposed to dangerous levels of radiation. It's estimated that eventually thousands will die from radiation-related sickness.
