Monday marks the first anniversary of the deadly Nepal earthquakes that happened last April and May. It claimed more than 9,000 lives and destroyed thousands of houses and buildings.

On the eve of the anniversary, Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli led a memorial at the ruins of the Dharahara tower, an historic monument in the capital Kathmandu destroyed by the quake. Dozens of people also participated in a candlelit vigil in Kathmandu.

Elsewhere in the capital, hundreds of quake survivors demanded the government to hasten instead of politicizing reconstruction efforts.
