Nepal is holding memorial services to remember the thousands of people killed in a devastating earthquake one year ago.

One ceremony just took place in the Dharahara Tower. The huge magnitude-7.8 quake hit the mountain nation at four minutes to midday on April 25 last year. It killed almost 9,000 people, obliterated buildings across the country, including many centuries-old temples and royal palaces in Kathmandu valley, and caused a huge avalanche on Mount Everest.

A second quake hit 17 days later, spreading further destruction. Authorities have promised to expedite long-delayed reconstruction projects. But about four million people are still living in temporary shelters.
