Buildings constructed by a Chinese company in Portoviejo were largely unaffected by last Saturday’s massive earthquake.
The Ecuador 911 Safety Emergency Response Command Center is the country’s public safety platform. It plays an important role in emergency response and relief resources allocation. It was built by the China CAMC Engineering company.
The firm dispatched a technical team to help with repair work across the city in the wake of the quake, including bringing the emergency phone system back online after only 20 minutes. The company is also constructing a hospital with more than 500 beds in the city.
The building has reportedly not been damaged at all by the quake. CAMC continues to help with rescue and relief efforts, and has offered electric generators to help resume power supply in quake zones. Its contributions have been praised by locals.
“What Chinese companies have shown is social responsibility that all enterprises should have. We have a friend called China, and they helped us when Ecuador needs it,” said Paola Cabezas Castillo, Esmeraldas, Ecuador.
