Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev on Wednesday night in Baku to discuss a political settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

"We want to settle this conflict peacefully, according to the norms and principles of international law. I think that all those years - more than 20 years  - which have passed since the ceasefire was declared, show that we aim for political settlement of the conflict," Aliyev said.

"It seems to us that with the assistance of the OSCE and the International Committee of the Red Cross it is important to undertake some trust-building measures and create the necessary conditions in order to relaunch the political process as soon as possible," Lavrov said.

Azerbaijani and Armenian forces said on Wednesday that they were largely observing a truce that halted four days of clashes. But the Azeri Defence Ministry said today that Armenian-backed forces had violated the ceasefire 119 times in the last 24 hours.
