Leaders and envoys from 52 countries and 4 international organizations are gathering in Washington D.C. for the fourth Nuclear Security Summit. On the sidelines of the meeting, Chinese President Xi Jinping has met with his US counterpart Barack Obama, and delivered a speech presenting China's firm commitment and constructive approach, to safeguarding radioactive materials around the world.

The world's two greatest powers around the same table. This is the first meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart Barack Obama this year. Cooperation and coordination are key.

"As the largest developing country and the largest developed country, and also as the world's top two economies, China and the United States have growing responsibilities for promoting world peace, stability and prosperity. There are wide areas where we should and can work with each other," Xi said.

"I have been committed throughout my administration to working effectively with China on a whole range of issues and have developed a frank and effective level of communications and cooperation with President Xi, as we seek to expand cooperation between our countries," Obama said.

One of the important outcomes of that cooperation is the Paris Agreement reached last year. The two countries announced that they will sign the convention at the earliest possible date.

Meanwhile President Xi has also reiterated China's status on the nuclear ambitions of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. He said that China insists on the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula...adding all problems should be resolved through dialogue.

Both the US and China have emphasized their cooperation in imposing new sanctions on the DPRK. The issue was also at the forefront of other bilateral meetings held in advance of the summit. Talks were held between Presidents Xi and South Korean President Park, and a trilateral meeting took place between the US, Japan and South Korea.

Park warned that further actions by Pyongyang would lead to yet more consequences.

"The international community will by no means condone the DPRK'S provocation and should it choose to undertake yet another provocation it is certain to find itself facing even tougher sanctions and isolation," Park said.

Xi Jinping has also attended a welcome banquet hosted by Barack Obama at the White House for all the attendees.

In a speech, he stressed that the risk of terrorists getting their hands on nuclear materials is increasing. He said all countries and international organizations should cooperate to fight terrorism.
