Cooperation over nuclear energy security between China and the US is under the spotlight ahead of the upcoming nuclear summit. For more insight, CCTV has talked to a Senior researcher and top nuclear security advisor in the US.
William Tobey is a senior fellow in the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. He also served on the US National Security Council Staff in three administrations.
He has high expectations for the upcoming Nuclear Security Summit.
"Well my hope would be that there would be progress across three areas. First of all, to fight complacency. Complacency should be replaced by a spirit of continuance in improvement. The second would be a commitment to a set of nuclear excellence principles. And then of course the third, I think what world leaders could do is to make clear that they feel a sense of an undelicatable responsibility for nuclear security within their countries." said William Tobey.
Participating leaders from across the world will take part in a nuclear crisis simulation during this summit, meeting in a roundtable discussion to work out an emergency plan. Tobey said this is significant, especially in the face of the growing terror threat worldwide.
On cooperation between China and the US against nuclear terror attacks, Tobey said the two countries share many common interests.
China and the U.S. have conducted a series of exchanges, since the signing of the China-U.S. Agreement for Cooperation Concerning Peaceful Use of Nuclear Energy in 1998. Many believe that we may see bilateral cooperation on a wider scale after this year's summit.
