Myanmar's new president-designate, Htin Kyaw, has been sworn into office after over a half century of military rule. The handover completes the transition of power that began after the National League for Democracy party won a landslide election last November.
The leader of NLD, Aung San Suu Kyi, says although she's not allowed to rule the country directly, she is "above the president", and will rule by proxy. Suu Kyi has been appointed the new head of foreign affairs, the president's office, education, and energy and electric power.
It's a historic day in Myanmar. For the first time in more than five decades, the country has a president without ties with the military... will need the military cooperation to achieve it.
