Kyrgyz opposition forms new government

BISHKEK, April 8 (Xinhua) -- Kyrgyz opposition on Thursday formed an interim government led by Roza Otunbayeva to replace the government of President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, who has fled to southern Kyrgyzstan after a day of bloody unrest in the capital.

Otunbayeva announced the formation of the new government at a news conference inside the parliament's building.

The new governing body would fulfil the duties of the president and the government and rule the Central Asian nation for six months, she said.

She said the opposition is looking for Bakiyev for talks on power transition but has failed to establish contact with him since his whereabouts remains unknown.

She said Bakiyev has no intention of leaving his post and was rallying support in Jalalabad.

The governor of the southern Kyrgyz state of Jalalabad told local media Thursday that Bakiyev, who fled to southern Kyrgyzstan after after his offices were occupied by protestors Wednesday night, has resigned.
