At least 28 injured in Sri Lanka train derailment

COLOMBO, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- At least 28 people were injured when three compartments of a train derailed in north central Sri Lanka early Thursday.

Vijeya Samarasinghe, the Railways Commercial Superintendent, said the mail train, which left the northern town of Vavuniya at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday and derailed at 1:45 a.m. Thursday.

The derailment happened between Galgamuva and Senarathgama stations, some 157 km north of Colombo, Samarasinghe said.

All injured have been under treatment at the Galgamuva hospital.
