GAZA, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Palestinian Islamic Hamas movement on Saturday said Iran's election results showed support for the country's defiant policy.

"The results show a wide public commendation for Iran's policy of challenge," said Fawzi Barhoum, a spokesman for Hamas which controls the Gaza Strip, in a statement sent to the press.

Iran's incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has won a landslide victory in the 10th presidential election, securing a second term of presidency in the next four years, Iran's Interior Minister Sadeq Mahsouli said on Saturday afternoon.

"The results also prove that the official level in Iran succeeded in sponsoring and maintaining the people's interests and hopes and protecting them from threats," Barhoum added.

Hamas, which enjoys fiscal and political support from Iran, swept over forces loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' secular Fatah movement and took control of Gaza in June 2007.

Barhoum said he hopes Iran will "continue supporting Hamas and boosting its endurance."
