Special Report: Iran presidential election 09 |

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has commented on the election results during her trip to Canada. Here is what she had to say.

Hillary Clinton, US Secretary of State, said, "We are monitoring the situation as it unfolds in Iran, but we, like the rest of the world, are waiting and watching to see what the Iranian people decide. The United States has refrained from commenting on the election in Iran, we obviously hope that the outcome reflects the genuine will and desire of the Iranian people."

Minutes after Clinton spoke, the White House released a statement praising the vigorous debate and enthusiasm that this election generated, particularly among young Iranians.

But the administration also expressed concern about "reports of irregularities."

Neither Clinton nor the White House mentioned Ahmadinejad or his chief rival by name, nor did they acknowledge the incumbent president's victory.
