Born on May 27, 1956, and raised in Bagheria, Italy, Giuseppe Tornatore began his career as a photographer and as a television director who specialized in making documentaries.
Rural life is a hallmark of his “Sicilian” movies such as Cinema Paradiso , The Star Maker and Malena . It was Cinema Paradiso , his second film about life in a small town in Sicily that brought him to world attention. It won the Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1989 and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Picture in 1990. The Star Maker , set in post-war Sicily, was released in 1995,
followed by Malèna in 2000, a powerful, thought-provoking story set in a fictional Sicilian town during World War II.
